Shopify Sales by Market Template

Shopify Sales by Market Template

The Sales by Market template creates a Pivot Table worksheet with one row per Shopify Market. It gives international and regional commerce teams a quick way to compare demand, discounting, refunds, and order value across the markets where customers placed orders.

What Market reporting tells you

Selling internationally means running several businesses at once, each with its own pricing, currency, shipping costs, and expectations. A single worldwide total hides all of it.

Use it to see:

  • Which Markets are large enough to justify local pricing, translation, or paid ads
  • Which look strong on sales but weaken once discounts and refunds are counted
  • Where average order value is high enough to absorb international shipping
  • Whether a Market you opened months ago has produced anything at all

For deeper Market analysis, including trends over time, see Shopify Markets Sales Analytics.

Metrics included

The worksheet contains:

  • Market
  • Total Order Count
  • Total Gross Sales
  • Total Discounts
  • Total Refund Amount Excluding Tax
  • Total Net Sales
  • Average Order Value

The metrics initially cover all time.

Compare Shopify Market performance

Use the report to answer questions such as:

  • Which Shopify Markets generate the most orders and sales?
  • Which markets depend most heavily on discounts?
  • Where do refunds have the largest effect on retained revenue?
  • Which markets have the highest Average Order Value?
  • Are newer markets beginning to contribute meaningful order volume?

Total Gross Sales shows merchandise revenue before discounts and refunds. Total Net Sales shows the amount left after those adjustments. Looking at both helps distinguish strong demand from strong retained revenue.

Compare markets fairly

Large markets will usually lead on total sales simply because they process more orders. Add context before making decisions:

  • Compare Average Order Value alongside Total Order Count
  • Divide discounts by Gross Sales to compare promotion intensity
  • Divide refund totals by Gross Sales to compare refund impact
  • Use the same fixed date range for every market
  • Compare equivalent selling seasons when markets have different calendars

Market results can reflect currency, pricing, product availability, shipping options, tax rules, and local customer behavior. Treat the worksheet as a starting point, then investigate the operational reason behind a difference.

Add a market trend

The template compares cumulative market results. To see when performance changed, add a Time Series worksheet and choose Market under Which breakdown. Select monthly or yearly columns and add the same metrics you use in the Pivot Table worksheet.
