Shopify Product Sales by Month Template
Shopify Product Sales by Month Template
The Product Sales by Month template creates a monthly Shopify product sales spreadsheet covering the most recent 24 calendar months. It is designed for seasonality, recent momentum, product-launch analysis, and buying decisions.
What the template creates
The template creates two worksheets.
Net Sales Report
- Product Title
- Handle
- Net Sales All Time
- One Net Sales column for each of the latest 24 months
Gross Sales Report
- Product Title
- Handle
- Gross Sales All Time
- One Gross Sales column for each of the latest 24 months
The newest month is the current calendar month. Its result is month to date until the month is complete.

Find Shopify product seasonality
Read across a product row to find repeated peaks and slow periods. Compare the same month in two years before calling a change unusual.
Seasonality can come from:
- Weather or holidays
- Product launch timing
- Inventory availability
- Promotions
- Changes in advertising
- The product moving into or out of a featured collection
Add inventory or product status fields when a zero-sales month might be caused by availability rather than demand.
Find rising and falling products
Use formula columns to compare:
- Latest completed month versus the prior month
- Latest completed month versus the same month last year
- Recent three-month average versus the earlier three-month average
A same-month year-over-year comparison controls for seasonality better than comparing two adjacent months.
Compare Net Sales and Gross Sales
If both rise together, original demand and retained revenue are moving in the same direction.
If Gross Sales rises faster than Net Sales, add Total Discount Amount and Total Refund Amount Excluding Tax for the same months. The difference may be coming from heavier promotions or refund activity.
Use completed months for decisions
The current-month column is incomplete. For a buying or performance review, sort by the latest completed month or calculate a month-to-date comparison against the equivalent dates from the prior year.
Do not compare ten days of the current month with an entire prior month.
Add supporting metrics
Useful additions include:
- Orders Count by month
- Net Quantity Sold by month
- Total Discount Amount by month
- Total Refund Amount Excluding Tax by month
- Current vendor, category, product type, tags, and status
Each added analytics column can use its own calendar month or fixed dates. See add analytics columns to a Shopify data worksheet.
For a longer, more compact view, use the Product Sales by Year template. For a store-level monthly report, use Monthly Store Performance.
