Format Shopify Product Descriptions With a Rich Text Editor

Format Shopify Product Descriptions With a Rich Text Editor

Shopify product descriptions can contain HTML for headings, bold text, links, and lists. Mixtable’s rich text editor lets you add that formatting visually, so you do not need to write or clean up HTML yourself.

This editor is best for working on one product description at a time. If you need to change descriptions across many products, use the bulk product description editor instead.

Before you start

Install Mixtable Spreadsheet Editor and open a spreadsheet that contains a Products (no variants) worksheet. The easiest option is to create a spreadsheet from the Basic Product Info template.

The rich text editor is attached to Shopify product rows. It does not appear when you select a row in a Products (with variants) worksheet, because those rows represent individual variants rather than products.

Step 1: Select the Shopify product

Open the Products (no variants) worksheet and select any cell in the row for the product you want to edit.

Mixtable uses the selected row to decide which Shopify product to display in the sidebar.

Step 2: Open the product sidebar

Click Sidebar in the spreadsheet toolbar. The sidebar heading should read Shopify Product and display fields such as Product Name, Description, Handle, Tags, and Vendor.

If the sidebar does not show a Shopify product, confirm that you selected a populated product row rather than an empty row or a variant row.

Step 3: Format the product description

Use the Description editor in the sidebar to update the content. Its toolbar supports:

  • Undo and redo
  • Bold, italic, and underline
  • Numbered and bulleted lists
  • Links
  • Clear formatting
  • HTML view when you need to inspect or adjust the markup directly
  • A styles menu offering Normal, Header 1, Header 2, and Code

The rich text editor does not edit product images. Manage those separately with Mixtable’s product image tools or in Shopify admin.

Step 4: Save the description to Shopify

After you change the description, click Save Product at the top of the sidebar. The button only appears once you have made a change, so you will not see it on a product you have not edited yet.

This sidebar action saves the product directly to Shopify. You do not need to run the separate worksheet Sync to Shopify flow for this change.

Wait for the success message confirming that the product was saved. Mixtable then refreshes the corresponding spreadsheet cells from Shopify.

Rich text editor or spreadsheet column?

Choose the method that matches the job:

  • Use the rich text editor when you want to format and review one description visually
  • Use a mapped product-description column when you want to edit many Shopify descriptions at once, paste prepared HTML, or generate descriptions with formulas

Both methods update the same Shopify product-description field. The difference is how you work with it and how you save the change.
