Shopify Sales by Product Tag Template
Shopify Sales by Product Tag Template
The Sales by Product Tag template creates a Pivot Table worksheet with one row per Shopify product tag. It helps you compare the performance of merchandising labels, campaigns, seasons, materials, audiences, or any other structure your team manages with product tags.
What tag reporting tells you
Tags are the most flexible grouping in Shopify, which makes them the only way to report on structures that exist purely in your head: a campaign, a season, a material, a supplier promise, a price tier.
Use it to see:
- How a tagged campaign or seasonal group performed as a whole
- Whether products tagged sale or clearance are actually clearing
- How a material, audience, or price tier performs across the catalog
- Which tags are worth keeping and which have stopped meaning anything
One caution: a product can carry many tags, so the same order activity can appear in several tag rows. Compare tags against each other rather than adding them up.
Metrics included
The worksheet contains:
- Product Tag
- Net Items Sold
- Gross Sales
- Discounts
- Returns Excluding Tax
- Net Sales
- Taxes
The metrics initially cover all time.

What this Shopify report helps you compare
Product tags are flexible, so the meaning of each row depends on how your store uses them. You can use the report to compare:
- Seasonal groups such as summer, holiday, or back-to-school
- Merchandising labels such as bestseller, clearance, or new arrival
- Product traits such as material, fit, style, or intended audience
- Internal campaign or assortment labels
Compare Gross Sales with Net Sales to see the effect of discounts and returns. Use Net Items Sold to separate revenue performance from unit volume.
Understand overlapping tag totals
A Shopify product can have more than one tag. When a product has several tags, its order activity can contribute to several report rows.
For example, a product tagged both summer and bestseller can contribute sales to both rows. This makes the worksheet useful for comparing groups, but adding every row together may produce a number larger than your store total.
Use store-level metrics when you need an additive total for reconciliation. Use tag reporting to compare the relative performance of the groups you created.
Improve your product-tag analysis
For clearer results:
- Use consistent tag spelling and capitalization across products
- Remove obsolete tags that no longer represent active merchandising groups
- Compare similar kinds of tags instead of mixing unrelated taxonomies
- Add Orders Count, Average Order Value, Refunded Quantity, or profit metrics where supported
- Apply a fixed date range when comparing seasonal campaigns from different years
