Shopify Holiday Season Sales Template
Shopify Holiday Season Sales Template
The Holiday Season Sales template compares Shopify product performance during the September 1 through December 31 period for the current year and the two previous years. It gives you consistent seasonal windows without configuring each product and date range manually.
Why compare holiday seasons directly
For many stores the last four months of the year decide how the year goes. The buying decisions behind that season get made months ahead, usually from memory or a hastily filtered export.
This template gives you the comparison the decision actually needs: the same September-to-December window across three years, so seasonal performance is measured against seasonal performance rather than against a quiet spring.
Use it to see:
- Which products reliably perform at holiday, year after year
- Which are gaining or losing seasonal relevance
- Which newer products became meaningful sellers quickly
- Which sold well only because they were discounted heavily
- What to stock, bundle, and promote before the season starts
The stakes are asymmetric here. Running out of a holiday seller costs you the peak weeks of the year, and over-ordering leaves you discounting it in January.
What the template creates
Holiday Net Sales
- Product Title
- Handle
- One Net Sales column for each of the latest three holiday seasons
Holiday Gross Sales
- Product Title
- Handle
- One Gross Sales column for each of the latest three holiday seasons
Each seasonal column covers September 1 through December 31 of its labeled year.

Compare holiday product performance
Use the template to find:
- Products that repeatedly perform during the holiday season
- Products gaining or losing seasonal relevance
- New products that quickly became meaningful holiday sellers
- Products whose Gross Sales remained strong but Net Sales weakened
- Assortment candidates for holiday promotion, bundling, or inventory planning
Read Gross Sales and Net Sales together
Gross Sales shows original merchandise value before discounts and returns. Net Sales shows what remained after those deductions.
If holiday Gross Sales rises while Net Sales stays flat, add Total Discount Amount and Total Refund Amount Excluding Tax for the same seasonal dates. The result may be driven by heavier promotions or refunds rather than weaker original demand.
Treat the current season carefully
The current holiday-season column is incomplete until December 31. During the season, compare it with the same elapsed dates from earlier years rather than the full prior seasons.
To create a like-for-like comparison:
- Add a Net Sales column with fixed dates from September 1 through today
- Add another Net Sales column using the equivalent prior-year dates
- Add the same supporting metrics and filters
- Calculate the change with a formula
Add useful holiday context
Add Shopify product fields such as:
- Vendor
- Product type
- Product category
- Tags
- Status
- Inventory context
Add analytics columns for:
- Orders Count
- Net Quantity Sold
- Total Discount Amount
- Total Refund Amount Excluding Tax
- Refunded Quantity
These additions show whether a holiday winner is driven by units, order frequency, discounting, or unusually high refunds.
Use narrower event windows when needed
The template’s holiday definition is September through December. For Black Friday and Cyber Monday, a December gifting window, or a store-specific campaign, add fixed-date analytics columns covering the exact event.
See Shopify analytics timeframes for fixed-date comparisons. For general monthly seasonality, use the Product Sales by Month template.
