Shopify Sales by Product Type Template

The Sales by Product Type template creates a Pivot Table worksheet with one row per custom Shopify product type. It is useful when your store uses product types as an internal assortment or merchandising structure.

What product type reporting tells you

Product type is your own label for what something is, so this report compares your catalog the way you actually think about it rather than the way Shopify’s taxonomy does.

Use it to see:

  • Which parts of your assortment carry the business, and which are along for the ride
  • Where discounting is concentrated, since it is usually a category habit rather than a per-product decision
  • Which types are worth extending with more range next season
  • Which types attract the most refunds, which often points at fit or expectation problems

Each product carries one product type, so these rows do not double-count.

Metrics included

The worksheet contains:

  • Product Type
  • Net Items Sold
  • Gross Sales
  • Discounts
  • Returns Excluding Tax
  • Net Sales
  • Taxes

The metrics initially cover all time.

Create the Sales by Product Type spreadsheet

  1. Install Mixtable Analytics Spreadsheet
  2. Click Create Spreadsheet
  3. Search for or select Sales by Product Type
  4. Create the spreadsheet

Product type and product category are different

Product type is a custom Shopify field maintained by your store. Product category uses Shopify’s standardized taxonomy.

Use product type when your internal groupings matter. Use Sales by Product Category when you want consistent standardized categories.

Find inconsistent product types

Mixtable creates a row for each distinct value. T-Shirt, T-Shirts, and Tees become separate rows.

Before making assortment decisions:

  • Review duplicate or nearly identical values
  • Standardize capitalization and spelling
  • Decide how blank product types should be handled
  • Update the underlying Shopify product fields where appropriate

Add context to the report

Useful metrics include:

  • Orders Count
  • Average Order Value
  • Gross and Net Quantity Sold
  • Refunded Quantity
  • Percent of Orders Refunded
  • Gross Profit, Gross Margin, and COGS where cost coverage allows

Use Gross Sales, discounts, returns, and Net Sales as a bridge. The combination shows whether a product type’s result comes from original demand or from deductions.

Track product types over time

Add a Reporting worksheet and choose Product type net sales by month. You can change the measure to Gross Sales, Orders Count, Net Quantity Sold, Total Refund Amount Excluding Tax, or Average Order Value and switch to yearly columns.

Use the Pivot Table worksheet from this template for a ranked all-time view, and use a Time Series worksheet for seasonality and momentum.
